This course is meant for:
- working photo-editors of magazines, newspapers and Internet-issues;
- photographers, art-managers and art-personalities who deal with photography willing to open up profession of photo-editor and experience in practice all niceties of work;
- photographers who find it important to take a detached view on their own work, to estimate their photographs from photo-editor’s point of view, willing to study how to make selection of the material, how to organize complicated shooting and work in picture crew.
Workshop program includes activities and discussions:
- broad principles of editorial staff work, system of organization of photo-department, photo-editor’s interaction with other departments at all stages of magazine production (discussions with chief editor, layout etc.);
- working with art-director, principles of presenting photographs in magazine;
- main principles, guidelines and specifics of selecting photographs for publication in the media (cover, page, two-page opening, photo-essay, photo-chronics, photo-reporting, photo-series, photo-story), on the Internet, for multimedia presentation of photo-material (slide-show, photo-film, animation etc.) with adequate audio accompaniment, for portfolio, for photo-album or book layout etc.;
- searching for images in photo-banks, data bases, working with photo-services, working with state photographers, special correspondents, free-lancers:
- legal and ethical aspects of work with photographers, law of copyright, right of use photographs, prediction of conflict of interests, difficult topics, journalists’ insurance, photo-equipment insurance;
- photographer’s work before, during and after shooting, information accumulation, forming-up shooting strategy, relationships with characters, efficiency, mobility and/or thoughtful immersing into the topic, psychological aspects of photographer’s work: “one man does make a team” and/or “all for one – one for all”;
- creation of photo-project: idea, script writing, implementation, prepress of photo-story (here we will discuss the main principles of working with photo-story: how to make photo-story from photo-material you have, how and with what picture to start and finish a photo-story, how to unravel the plot; concept, narrative and style unity and variety in photo-story. Editing photo-story for various goals: publication in the media, contest – 12 photographs, exhibition, multimedia show – photo-film, book etc.);
- searching for new authors, photo-editor’s work with new photographers, how young photographers can make their way to magazine, why photo-contests, photo-festivals and portfolio-reviews are important;
- organization of shooting (planning budget, forming photographic crew etc.);
- course program also includes work with photo-material of photojournalists’ groups.
On the first day of the workshop entrants have to present the results of their pre-assignment task:
1. Make a list of Russian and foreign photo-agencies (working photo-editors should present a list of agencies they work with or plan to work with; photographers should present a list of agencies and web-sites they regularly look through + list of favorite Russian and foreign agencies and photographers).
2. Make a list of top-priority magazines falling into GENERAL CATEGORY and SOCIO-POLITICAL CATEGORY (that can be guide for photo-editor’s work).
3. Collection of photographs devoted to PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGNS of DMITRY MEDVEDEV and BARACK OBAMA (for working photo-editors this should be collection based on materials from photo-agencies (previews), for others – collection based on materials from the Internet (previews)).
4. Editing of photo-material (partly edited shooting in previews should be enclosed) for an article of 12 pages (text of 29000 type characters on the basis of 4000 type character per page should be enclosed). NB! FOR COURSE PARTICIPANTS ONLY!!
